#MyFreedomDay (A day Against Slavery)

Editorial

Every year the 2nd of December, marks the day (December 2nd 1949) when the General Assembly of the United Nations Convention abolished slavery. However, slavery is still a modern day issue, as stated by the CNN, “amoung its many victims are at least 10 million children.”

CNN, one of the largest U.S. national news networks, every year since 2011 has been contributing to help resolve this crucial issue. Modern Day Slavery is being continued by the buying and selling of adults and children in public markets, “forced to marry against their will and provide labour under the guise of “marriage,” forced to work inside clandestine factories on the promise of a salary that is often withheld, or on fishing boats where men and boys toil under threats of violence. They are forced to work on construction sites, in stores, on farms, or in homes as maids.” However, we are more connected to this issue than you may think, in fact some of our everyday products and services are actually made by modern day slaves. According to the 2018 Global Slavery Index Findings, issued in The Guardian, “Labour extracted through force, coercion, or threats produces some of the food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the footballs we kick. The minerals that men, women, and children have been made to extract from mines find their way into cosmetics, electronics, and cars, among many other products.” This is why CNN has been promoting school districts around the world to allow for students to bring awareness on modern-day slavery and to celebrity freedom. CNN’s mission is to travel the world to “unravel the tangle of criminal enterprises trading in human life.” as well as “Amplifying the voices of survivors.”

This year on March 16th, you can join the CNN and fellow students to help prevent modern-day slavery. All you need to do is print out the pledge, then record a video of you with the pledge and sign the document. After that proceed to nominate 3 friends that will have to do the same. You can post the video on Instagram or any other social media with the hashtag: #MyFreedomDay. Another option would be to answer the question “What are you doing to help end slavery?” After that you can proceed to share your answer and nominate 3 friends that will have to do the same. Please join CNN in their mission to help prevent modern-day slavery.
