Tiktok Takes a Life

Hi readers! Today I would like to propose a discussion on the app we all love and spend hours on, Tiktok. We can all agree that Tiktok saves us from boredom in a time like this, however, is it really worth all our time?

I know people who spend more than 5 hours per day on Tiktok. Think of where that time could be spent on. Now that we are mostly confined to our phones we find comfort in being lazy, and rarely challenge our brain. Check out the reading list posted, go out for a bike ride, hang out with friends, or learn a new language. There are so many things we can do with our time, we just have to be willing enough to seize the opportunity to do so. I don’t want this to sound like an inspirational speech, so I will stop now. I would, however, like to note something further. Not only is it a mindless activity draining our time, but it is also dangerous for its users.

There are more than 1 billion users on Tiktok currently and many of them are under the age of 13. While it is a parents’ job to protect their kids from seeing certain content, we need to be conscious about what we post on these social media platforms, and it is our job to report things that we may think cross a line. There have been various trends going around that we should be aware of, and make sure that they don’t continue.

Just recently a 10 year old girl died in Italy from participating in a so called “Blackout Challenge.” We strongly encourage all of our readers that one doesn’t participate in this challenge in order to preserve your health.

I know when I first learned of this incident I was shocked, it did not make sense to me that someone would be so careless with their life. However, I considered after a while, the vulnerability of the youth and their dependence on growing social media. Though many kids are taught to weigh their decisions with care, others simply don’t know.

We, the older members of Tiktok, must be conscious of what we post and what kinds of activities we indulge in. Please be mindful of others, and know that others do not have the conscience you may have.

Would you be able to delete TikTok?
