Everything you need to know about IB

Dear 10th-grade students, it is now your turn to choose IB subjects! As you will be following the IB Diploma Programme for the next two years, choosing the subjects could be hard and stressful. Here is some information that might help you!

1) What is the IB Diploma Programme?

  • It is a two-year educational program aimed at 16 to 18 years olds in 140 countries around the world. It provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education and is recognized by many universities worldwide. It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical well-being of students.

2) What are the requirements for IB Diploma?

  • The curriculum is made up of three required components and six subject groups.

  • The three core elements are Theory of Knowledge, The extended essay, and CAS.

  • The six subject groups are Studies in language and literature, Language acquisition, Individuals and societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the arts.

  • The students should study at least three subjects at a higher level and three subjects at a standard level.

3) How is the IB assessed?

  • Internal Assessment: For each subject, students will complete the Internal Assessment (or IA), which counts 20% to 30% of the total grade. For languages, the students will have oral exams, and for the other subjects, there will be the written projects.

  • External Assessment: There will be written exams in May of the second year (12th grade), except for Film and Visual Art. TOK Paper and Extended Essay are the external assessments.

4) How is the grading policy?

  • The maximum score for Diploma is 45 points. The maximum point for each subject is 7 and there are up to 3 additional points for TOK and Extended Essay.

  • The minimum score for Diploma is 24 points; a minimum of 12 in HL and 9 in SL are required.

5) When is the deadline for choosing IB subjects?

  • The students need to decide by April 30th, 2021. For 10th grade students, the class registration meeting will be held on March 30th, during the R day.

6) Is it possible to change the subject after?

  • The final changes should be made by September when we come back to school after the Summer vacation.

7) Is it possible to take 4 HL?

  • Yes, but it is very challenging, so if you’d like to take 4 HL, you need to talk with either the IB Diploma coordinator or University Counselor.

8) Where can I find the general course information?

  • Here is the presentation provided by Ms. Meroni, the IB Diploma Coordinator (vmeroni@asmilan.org). You can find all the subjects offered at ASM and their course descriptions.

  • Here is the IBO Official Website.
