After living in both New York and now Milan, I’ve noticed how parallel these two major fashion capitals are. While New York emits an energetic and vibrant energy, Milan feels more muted and polished. The reason these two cities exude such different energies is because of their diverse environments and inhabitants. New York is known as the melting pot, inhabiting foreigners from all parts of the world looking for fortune, a fresh start, and new experiences. New Yorkers often set fashion trends by creating looks that are equally unique and bold. Living in New York allowed me to explore different styles without feeling judged or criticised by others, which is why I believe New York is a great place to discover your interests.

While New Yorkers experiment with different colors and styles, the Milanese typically wear minimalistic pieces that normally incorporate muted and rich colors. The Milanese have an extremely sophisticated style, meaning that individuals normally tend not to experiment, but rather stick with the classics. The environment in Milan is very different from the environment in New York, as the Milanese carry themselves as very sophisticated individuals who can often come across as critical. I’ve personally enjoyed New York’s approach to fashion as it’s more freeing and allows individuals to explore their preferences without feeling the weight of social constraints. In the streets of New York, I’ve seen inhabitants wear outfits ranging from their pyjamas to looks that are extremely inventive and creative. It’s inspiring to see individuals be so fearless and bold in their sense of style which is why, in my opinion, New York wins in the category of fashion. Overall, I have enjoyed exploring both Milanese and New York culture and fashion styles and will continue to dissect these two polar opposite worlds in the future.
