Why is Milan Considered a Fashion Capital?

The Italian city of Milan is internationally recognized as one of the world’s fashion capitals, alongside New York, Paris, and London. Many famous designers, such as Gianni Versace, Guccio Gucci, and Giorgio Armani, to name a few, regard this city as their muse, catapulting them into their eventual success. But how come Milan is regarded as a fashion powerhouse that has the potential to inspire individuals in such a way?

Milan’s fashion roots dig as deep as the Middle Age and Renaissance periods, during which the province began producing luxury goods.Between 1865 and 1877, The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II was created, and recognized as the first major department store in Italy. Often nicknamed il salotto di Milano, the shopping center became widely known as the city's most major landmark, positioned near the Milano Duomo. This advancement was regarded as a monumental stride as traditionally, artisans would sell their items directly to customers or in small stores. Opening department stores around the city helped modernize the distribution of clothes in Milan.

Although Milan’s capital Lombardy was becoming a major textile production center, during the 1950s and 60s. Florence was respected as the fashion capital of Italy and home of the Italian “Alta Moda,” the equivalent of the French “Haute Couture.” Nonetheless in the 1970s, Milan's fashion image was recognized as being more desirable, as Florentine designs were usually more formal and expensive. Milanese designs, taking inspiration from Parisian couture, are known for their practicality and simplicity. While even its inhabitants dress in somewhat muted colors, they emphasized the quality of tailoring and fabrics. Fashion magazines of the time showcased Milanese styles and trends, interpreting classics in new ways, while simultaneously staying relatively traditional.

The city became internationally successful and regarded as a fashion capital towards the late-1980s and early 1990s. Since 2011, Milan has been recognized as the third leading fashion capital of the world, with New York leading in first. Milanese fashion will always exude elegance and grace, for its superior quality and timeless style. It is truly no wonder Milan has such high praise in the fashion world and continues to inspire all who witness its beauty in real life.
